Robert Earl Burton founded The Fellowship of Friends in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1970.

Burton modeled his own group after that of Alex Horn, loosely borrowing from the Fourth Way teachings of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky. In recent years, the Fellowship has cast its net more broadly, embracing any spiritual tradition that includes (or can be interpreted to include) the notion of "presence."

The Fellowship of Friends exhibits the hallmarks of a "doomsday religious cult," wherein Burton exercises absolute authority, and demands loyalty and obedience. He warns that his is the only path to consciousness and eternal life. Invoking his gift of prophecy, he has over the years prepared his flock for great calamities (e.g. a depression in 1984, the fall of California in 1998, nuclear holocaust in 2006, and an ominous, yet unspecified new threat late in 2018.) While non-believers shall perish, through the direct intervention and guidance from 44 angels (including his divine father, Leonardo da Vinci) Burton and his followers will be spared, founding a new, and more perfect civilization.

Many regard Robert Earl Burton a narcissist and sociopath, surrounded by a largely greed- and power-driven inner circle. The following pages offer abundant evidence supporting that conclusion.

This archive draws on official Fellowship publications and websites, news archives, court documents, cult education and awareness forums, the (former) Fellowship Wikipedia page, the long-running Fellowship of Friends - Living Presence Discussion, the Internet Archive, the (former) Fellowship of Friends wiki project, and the editor's own 13-year experience in the Fellowship.

Guys, I think FOF will collapse all by itself and probably sooner than we think… Teacher will teach only if he gets cash. The way things are going there is less and less of cash coming in.

Please keep shedding light, keep exposing the lies, keep telling your stories. Truth doesn’t need to be defended it just needs to be seen. FOF is so corrupted and commercialized but doesn’t show this ugly side to new seekers. The teaching became so clearly absurd and insane so all we have to do is simply post it without adding anything. It speaks (screams) for itself!

I’ll continue to post the original stuff from FOF as it is – unaltered, and let it speak for itself. I encourage others to do the same. Let buyer beware. Hopefully those students who are still in doubt will make up their minds. Let us see the brainwashing, shameless money squeezing, and purely delusional interpretations of various images being sold to students as “Sacred Teaching”. Let us see it for what it is and be honest with ourselves.
Dear Friends,

The Video Distribution Octave is undergoing further refinement. Our Teacher underlines the importance for each of us to be as closely connected to this sacred Teaching as possible. He has listed as one of our highest priorities the viewing of the Teaching Events on DVD.

The School is moving at lightening speed. C Influence continually reveals new knowledge. The level of Robert’s Teaching becomes ever more distilled and objective. Each student will now be able to go to propylaia and access the list of the Teaching videos. You will find the list of videos under the Link “From the Teacher”.

"Vena" wrote on the Fellowship of Friends Discussion blog, February 13, 2007 at 7:31 p.m.:
I am a longtime member who has recently made the decision, with great relief, to leave this group.

I have known for a long time that Robert Burton’s teaching was seriously limited and even making things more complicated and difficult than they are in fact. He is promising his followers awakening but because of his lack of understanding he is keeping them stuck and dependent on an increasingly cumbersome and unnecessary technique – something that he calls “The Sequence”. There are also many untruths and theories taught that have nothing to do with the Fourth Way or any other path to awakening.

I have wondered for years if he was knowingly deceiving people or if he in fact believed what he was doing and saying. Some of his statements and claims are so outlandish that it is almost impossible to believe that he could make them and even more bizarre that intelligent people would believe them.

Someone recently told me about a psychological condition known as pathological narcissism. I did a little reading about this condition on the internet. Robert Burton seems to be a classic example.

According to my understanding of this condition his whole identity would crumble if he saw and acknowledged that what he has created is a charade. It also explains his habit of devaluing people that have served him for years at great expense to themselves if they choose to question him or leave the organization. It explains his unquenchable lust for money and sex. It explains his need to be constantly surrounded by very passive people who reflect back to him the illusion he has created about himself. It explains his enormous sense of entitlement at the expense of others and his exaggerated claims of accomplishment out of all proportion to reality. It has even made it easier to have a little compassion for him. I think as far as spiritual evolution goes he is in a very unfortunate place.

At the last Fellowship event with Robert that I attended it was clear to me that almost everyone there was in some state of hypnosis.

It has also become clear that the real motives behind this organization are sex and money. The FOF has become highly skilled at fundraising from the membership. There is a monthly membership fee of several hundreds of dollars that basically only buys the ability to go onto the property. All other events (except for an occasional open market where members sell goods and services to each other) such as dinners with the teacher, meetings led by him or other students, receptions, concerts, any publications, etc. have a significant additional cost. Members are also strongly encouraged to donate expensive items several times a year to be auctioned off to the group. Those who can afford it buy dinners for eight at these auctions for $8000. About $500,000 a year is raised in this way alone. There are also travel events that are organized by the FOF. Members are made to feel they are missing out on the “cutting edge” of the teaching if they cannot manage to afford these costly trips which also result in large financial profits to the organization. There are constant raffles that members are solicited to participate in. At every event or gathering there are young female members that go from table to table and group to group asking members to buy raffle tickets or to sign up for breakfasts, teas, and dinners with the teacher. These events cost somewhere from $100 – $300 each. Special dinners, such as Xmas, New Year’s, the teacher’s birthday, the anniversary of his “crystallization”, etc are sold for even greater amounts, $500 – $1000. Members are also asked to give money for wildly expensive gifts of jewelry for him (that he has already selected) for his birthday and other occasions. The use of credit cards is highly encouraged even if the ability to pay is doubtful. It is needless to say that many members are in serious financial trouble.

He is almost continuously surrounded by the various young men who are his current lovers. This entourage is usually at least eight but often ten or more. Most of these men now come from Russia or other countries where a visa to the USA is highly coveted. They sheepishly follow him around or sit passively near him without speaking, usually dressed in the expensive suits, shoes and jewelry that they receive as gifts. They are so expressionless that they almost seem like zombies. These men are not homosexual but they have chosen for various reasons to submit to sexual behavior that is against their natures. I always found this to be extremely disturbing.

In spite of these things there are many seemingly sincere and intelligent people in this group who know what is going on yet still somehow believe that the FOF is a legitimate spiritual school.

I would like to understand how so many intelligent people, including several mental health professionals, could have joined this group but especially why in countless cases it has taken many years and much anguish to leave. I think Sarah’s recent posting (#81) comes very close to an explanation.

I would also like to express appreciation for Former Student’s posting (#72) and just say that I hope he will take the time to write the episode he refers to regarding his process of rebuilding confidence and self esteem. This could be very helpful to other former students.

I would also like to add that in spite of the strange and idiosyncratic nature of the FOF I did learn some important things and certainly had some very interesting experiences.

$250,000 is a tiny part of what Burton has won. He has conned his followers out of the equivalent of the biggest mega-lottery prizes in history, paid out over 40 years. My relatively uninformed guesstimate of the total money that has passed through Fellowship of Friends (in practical terms, indistinguishable from Robert Burton due to malfeasance of the Board) is something between $146-$200 million. Someone in the Ouspensky Office let me have a brief look at what I remember to be some RPG summary financial reports from the IBM 36 the year I left, which is the basis for my guesses. Burton claimed that ‘C-influence’ tasked him with building a city, sufficient and self-sufficient enough to be the basis of a whole new civilization, which I would take to mean at least some fairly large, well-built, durable buildings filled with libraries of organized knowledge, some decent irrigation projects to allow agriculture, and whatever. Instead, there remains of all this money a bunch of “stuff” in a stick-built faux chateau with some incredibly high-maintenance landscaping around it and supporting infrastructure worth maybe $10 million, plus the jerry-built Lodge, and the Town Hall and workshops. There must be some readers out there who can tell us if this is even in the ballpark?

Don’t you just wish you were here:
“Sunday Teaching Dinner at the Ming House, “The Inner Journey”

Join Robert and friends as he explores the inner journey of the Steward and the Nine of Hearts as they travel towards Presence.

Seat at Robert’s table $150/$100

Standing $100/$75

Remember, all the proceeds go to the building and beautification of Isis.”
Yes, lets explore an imaginary journey of imaginary characters towards the destination called Presence… ( Shit, I thought that presence was always here and now, I guess it’s somewhere else and there is a (pricey) inner journey towards it… Now, I have to send my Steward with his girl to get to Presence and tell me how it is to be present… Wow, so intricate!)

Well, as long as ALL proceeds go to the beautification… of someone’s else’s place… I guess I don’t mind attending and paying. What’s $150 anyway. Let him buy another beautiful trinket or a boy, why not. All this expensive stuff he is compulsively buying – it’s so… beautiful!

See you there my friends. Let’s explore the journey of some imaginary cartoon inner-Super-heroes and talk about it like it’s for real. It’s called Work on oneself.

Here’s to our Outrageous Good Fortune, dears!

Congratulations! How interesting that Wayne Mo** [Wayne Mott] would bring a camera to document what was sanctioned by the authorities as legal freedom of speech. That other brainwashed follower, Steven “Olive Oil” Damb*** [Steven Dambeck]sounds equally over-protective in his reaction to your presence.

Speaking of olive oil, I don’t know how it is now, but when Steven first opened his oil business, he was using unpaid help (I was one of them) to pick his harvest from the trees that were located on Fellowship property. How did he manage to use Fellowship property to make a private profit?

"dandelion" wrote on the Fellowship of Friends Discussion blog, July 6, 2008:
One of the biggest coverups by the FOF was the purchasing of fake Italian passports for 3 Russians in a Naples train station by Judith Grace - cost thousands of $$$.

Also just one of Robert's velvet suits cost $20,000 and he bought at least 4.

Here is an interesting quote from the Apollo Olive Oil web site (capital letters added by me for emphasis):
Steven [Steven Dambeck] planted HIS first 600 olive trees in 1979, on steep slopes adjacent to HIS fruit orchard. And, after traveling extensively through the Mediterranean during the 1980’s, he knew he wanted to make olive oil.
So every FOF member who contributed their personal time laboring in the orchard/olive grove at Apollo since 1979, thinking they were working for THEIR church’s orchard and olive grove, were apparently working free for Mr. Dumb**k and HIS for-profit olive oil company. Guess who paid for his extensive travel through the Mediterranean during the 1980s. This certainly poses legal and, at least, ethical questions about personal inurement from a non-profit organization. By the way, if any olive oilers are reading this, the use of “1980′s” in your text is a grammatical error.

35. steve lang – July 6, 2008:
How did he [Steven Dambeck] manage to use Fellowship property to make a private profit?
Answer: Private inurement. According to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service: ‘Churches and religious organizations, like all exempt organizations under IRC [Internal Revenue Code] section 501(c)(3), are prohibited from engaging in activities that result in inurement of the church’s or organization’s income or assets to insiders (i.e., persons having a personal and private interest in the activities of the organization). Insiders could include the minister, church board members, officers, and in certain circumstances, employees. Examples of prohibited inurement include the payment of dividends, the payment of unreasonable compensation to insiders, and transferring property to insiders for less than fair market value. The prohibition against inurement to insiders is absolute; therefore, any amount of inurement is, potentially, grounds for loss of tax-exempt status.’ [Steven D*mb*ck possibly is, or possibly was, a minister of the Fellowship of Friends church. Steven D*mb*ck possibly was the recipient of the gift of real property from the assets of the Fellowship of Friends church. That would be the property where his home now stands. Steven D*mb*ck, according to Elena in her recent account above, possibly claims to own property that belongs to an homeowners' association and is owned as 'community property.' Steven D*mb*ck possibly is, or possibly was, the recipient of favourable, no-bid, business arrangements with the Fellowship of Friends church (likely directed by the head hauncho himself). The Ap*ll* Ol*v* O*l [Apollo Olive Oil] company may be likewise favourably treated. Benefits may extend beyond just the olives - i.e. to other agricultural areas and materials. Steven D*mb*ck possibly is 'person having a personal and private interest in the activities of the organization.' The practices of Steven D*mb*ck and Ap*ll* Ol*v* O*l may be worthy of investigation for exploitation of workers (both legal and illegal workers, as well as possibly using Fellowship of Friends' religious workers for the benefit of these private interests; both in the past and possibly now.] ‘An IRC section 501(c)(3) organization’s activities must be directed exclusively toward charitable, educational, religious, or other exempt purposes. Such an organization’s activities may not serve the private interests of any individual or organization. Rather, beneficiaries of an organization’s activities must be recognized objects of charity (such as the poor or the distressed) or the community at large (for example, through the conduct of religious services or the promotion of religion). Private benefit is different from inurement to insiders. Private benefit may occur even if the persons benefited are not insiders. Also, private benefit must be substantial in order to jeopardize tax-exempt status.’ [Perhaps Steven D*mb*ck is a charity case. But to single one out in that manner may constitute 'private benefit.' And, likely, 'substantial' at that.] - – - – - - To all: The lessons of love taught by the Fellowship of Friends are primarily ‘tough love.’ That is what abusers primarily understand and that is why they deliver it upon others.

"Joseph G" wrote on the Fellowship of Friends Discussion blog, December 3, 2007:
Sorry if this has already been mentioned. Another clever fundraising trick that came out a few years ago was to suggest that members look around the house for items (books, paintings, jewelry, prints) that may have been given to them by the teacher or that they had purchased previously, and donate these BACK to the Fellowship to be auctioned off again. The idea was that this way “other students would be given the chance to enjoy them.” If you think about it, this scheme effectively attempted to transform the auctions into an impressions lease program. I.e., not only could one continue to always feel guilty about never quite donating enough money to support the school, one was also now provided with an opportunity to feel bad about hanging onto the meager possessions one had somehow managed to accumulate over the years.
Gives the idea of eternal recurrence a whole new spin.

Sheik [moderator], I am really sorry if this is a duplicate post. Something is up and things don’t go through… I tried to send it couple times, may be now it will work.

Hi Todd [reporter with Sacramento Bee], (and all)

These are partial emails about fundraising events that were going non-stop, generating additional income for the teacher on top of obligatory monthly teaching payments. Note how many and how frequently these money-grabbing events were held. This is only from the year 2004. In 2005-2007 “financial goals” soared, so did the amount of such events, including the infamous Journey Fourth By Day event in 2005 – “the biggest fundraiser ever”.

Usually the teacher selects a couple of pieces of jewelry for each auction, and then the auction team puts pressure on members to buy “bookmarks” for $44. There are silent online auctions, live auctions, and travel raffles.

Since 2002 FOF started to publish a weekly leaflet of teacher’s “thoughts”, and were heavily pressing every student in the fof to subscribe to it. The price initially was $3 per issue, later this leaflet was often published twice a week and price for the printed issues increased to $5 per issue. There are some interesting rumors about the use of the money generated from these publications…

All of us, who reached together the biggest ever challenge of $107K at a Live Auction!

Thank you all for participating.

In friendship, Apollo Auction Team

I think after this historic mega-auction the teacher tasted the sweet flavor of getting more than 100K in one shot, and ever since he started to “dream bigger”. His “aims” (or better to say his greed) skyrocketed, and this was virtually forcing many students in Isis to go into debt and poverty.

I have to say that FOF council showed much creativity in inventing ways to raise teacher’s personal income. Besides teaching events, raffles and auctions there is the whole “media octave” – videos of events, CD’s etc – forcefully sold to the centers as “Center packages”. Students in the centers were required to watch these videos or to rent them for $5-$10 each. Also there were Robert’s birthday, “crystallization” and other gifts. The centers had to collect money for those gifts as a sign of gratitude. Usually the center will go in debt paying for the previous “gift” and the new one is already due. I have e-mails showing the “gifts” and their prices.

In years 2002-2007 FOF had turned into crazy money-collecting machine, and one has to understand that this was done precisely to satisfy teacher’s ever-increasing demands and greed. These money-grabbing events contributed to his personal enrichment.

"steve lang" wrote on the Fellowship of Friends Discussion blog, December 1, 2007:
I contacted Todd from the [Sacramento] Bee and he wrote back asking if I know what the $100,00.00 I donated over the course of 13 years was used for. I wrote him back and told him I don’t know but I do know that he [Robert Burton] has his underwear shipped back and forth from Oregon House to Beverly Hills to be dried cleaned! Even people with much more money than Robert don’t do silly things like that. If he had to work for his money I doubt he would be so lavish with it.

While students of the Fellowship of Friends were cult-ily coerced into donations totaling $30,000 dollars to replace stolen jewelry via Robert Burton’s suit case rifling via a recent trip back from Mexico…

Now that’s ‘true love’! WTF?

Whew! What a Pink Cracker!
